Snatched

Looking perfectly put together.

What it means

Snatched means looking flawless and put together, from hair and makeup to outfit. Cambridge defines it as “very attractive, especially as a result of doing something to improve their appearance,” such as makeup or exercise. People also use it for a body that looks toned, as in a snatched waist.

It has nothing to do with the ordinary meaning of snatched, grabbed or stolen, which can make a first encounter with it confusing.

Where it comes from

Dictionary.com credits New York City drag culture in the 1990s with snatched, along with hunty, slay and yaas. Its explanation is that the word comes from Black drag culture, where performers wear weaves: a look that is stunning enough might snatch your wig right off, the way something can knock your socks off.

Dictionary.com says snatched “picked up steam, especially in 2016,” helped by drag reaching mainstream TV.

Who says it now

The translator files snatched under Gen Z by its own convention, though the word is older than that generation. In our observation it is most at home today in beauty, fashion and fitness talk.

Tone

Usually flattering and playful, the language of friends hyping each other up. Because it is about looks and bodies, it can feel uncomfortable when an adult says it about a teenager.

What adults hear, what kids mean

An older listener may hear snatched and think of theft or kidnapping. A kid saying “your outfit is snatched” is most likely paying a big compliment. Out of context, “she got snatched” really is ambiguous, so ask.

How to use it

Snatched is a compliment about appearance, so it is used for people, outfits and makeup rather than events. Like slay, it comes out of drag culture, and the two often turn up together.

How to answer it

If someone says you look snatched, “Thank you!” is a good answer. Adults are usually better off complimenting a teenager’s outfit in their own words than borrowing this one.
